Meaning:
Any matter that interrupts meaning and the process of communication is called a barrier.
Communication barriers are the various obstacles and hurdles which arise in between effective communication leading to misunderstanding and misinterpretations by the receiver.

Barriers to effective communication
The following are the barriers
a. Physical Barriers
i. Noise. External sounds and disturbances that influence the interest and attention of the receiver and sender.
ii. Physical distance: long geographical as well as the physical distance between sender and receiver.
iii. Moreover, physical designing and arrangement of resources with designing of office.
b. Organizational Barriers
i. Size of organization: Too many managerial levels i.e too tall and flat with maximum numbers of members influence the communication system.
ii. Goal plans and policies: Unclear goals and poor planning influence the encoding and decoding process.
iii. Status and position: Level of management with ego problems like top-level superiors don’t like to communicate with subordinates.
iv. Resource and Technology: lack of resources and modern technology like the internet, lack of email, fax machine, telephone, etc can create barriers.
v. Lack of proper motivation techniques by management.
vi. Rules, regulations, and cultural norms and values of the organization.
c. Psychological barriers
Following are the psychological barriers
i. Superiority Complex: Superior and top-level managers would not like to talk and communicate with lower lever staff due to their ego.
ii. Individual differences and perception: It includes an individual frame of reference i.e separate culture, education level, ethnicity, religion, and other factors. Two people do not share the same perception and feelings.
iii. Premature evaluation: Evaluating subject matter before completion of the message and at the time of speaking by the sender. It is also concerned with the lack of maturity level of sender and receiver.
iv. Emotions influence how a receiver interprets a message when it is received.
v. Distrust: lack of trust in the communication or information of others.
d. Semantic Barriers:
i. It is language-related barriers.
ii. Poor language or language without the level of standard emotion affects the meaning of communication.
iii. Use of complex and multi-meaning words that creates a level of confusion in the mind of the receiver.
iv. Wrong translation from one language to another language.
v. Using of jargon while communicating.
e. Other barriers:
i. Wrong interpretation
ii. Unorganized thoughts
iii. Avoiding the listener.
iv. Low pitch and tone.
v. Different cultural levels.
vi. Social rules, regulations, and standards.
Hence, these are the barriers to effective communication.
